CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Quarterback James MacPherson scored on a one-yard run with 77 seconds left to cap one of the greatest comebacks in Atlantic Coast Conference history as Wake Forest stunned North Carolina, 32-31. Wake Forest (5-4, 3-4 ACC) trailed 24-0 at halftime and 31-14 heading into the fourth quarter. But MacPherson's keeper capped a 59-yard drive and cornerback Caron Bracy recovered a fumble in the final minute to seal the win. John Stone started the rally with an 11-yard run early in the third quarter and fellow receiver Davis scored on a five-yard run just over five minutes later to get the Demon Deacons within 24-14. But freshman Darian Durant threw his fourth TD pass of the game, a 12-yarder to tight end Zach Hilton that gave North Carolina (5-4, 4-3) a 17-point cushion heading into the final period. Wake Forest took the ensuing kickoff and moved 80 yards, with Tarence Williams going in from three yards to make it 31-21. Williams gained 101 yards on 29 carries. With the Tar Heels suddenly unable to move the ball, Tyler Ashe kicked a 42-yard field goal and a bad snap on a punt resulted in a safety with 4:59 left. After the free kick, Williams carried six straight times for 22 yards before MacPherson socred the go-ahead touchdown. MacPherson completed 14-of-23 passes for 142 yards with an interception and carried nine times for 49 yards. The loss was a severe blow to the bowl hopes of North Carolina, which wasted a spectacular performance by Durant. He was 24-of-32 for 361 yards with four TDs and an interception. Wake Forest recorded its third straight road win and defeated the Tar Heels for just the second time in the last 12 meetings. The intrastate rivals played for the 98th time in the ACC's second-longest series.
