EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) -- Luke McCown passed for 227 yards and five touchdowns as Louisiana Tech clinched at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference title with a 53-30 victory over Texas-El Paso.

McCown, who completed 20-of-31 passes, tossed two TDs in each of the first two quarters to give the Bulldogs a 32-15 halftime lead.

Louisiana Tech broke it open with three touchdowns in the third quarter, taking a 53-23 lead into the final period.

The Bulldogs (6-3, 6-1 WAC) posted their third straight victory and opened a one-game lead over Boise State, which defeated Hawaii late Saturday night.

A victory over Tulsa on November 24 will give Louisiana Tech its first outright conference title since winning the Southland Conference championship in 1984. The Bulldogs play at Kansas State next week.

Joseph Smith rushed for 136 yards on 24 carries for Louisiana Tech, including a 45-yard TD in the third period.

D.J. Curry caught seven passes for 108 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs.

Wesley Phillips completed 11-of-17 passes for 144 yards with an interception for the Miners (2-7, 2-5), who suffered their fifth straight loss.

Louisiana Tech has scored at least 40 points in six straight games, winning five of them.
