ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Ticker) -- Kent Naughton kicked three field goals and Brad Van Pelt passed for 171 yards and a touchdown to lead Colorado State to a 24-17 Mountain West Conference victory over New Mexico. Colorado State (6-5, 5-2 MWC) capitalized on five interceptions thrown by Casey Kelly. Naughton kicked a pair of 35-yard field goals in the second quarter, with the second one coming as time expired in the first half. Both came after interceptions. Van Pelt tossed a 39-yard pass to Dallas Davis and threw for the two-point conversion to give the Rams a 14-0 advantage with 10:51 remaining in the third quarter. Van Pelt completed 11-of-22 passes for 171 yards as the Rams won for the fourth time in five games. Kelly threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Counter just 63 seconds after Davis' score to cut the deficit to 14-7. The Lobos tied the score with 8:32 remaining in the third when safety Terrell Golden picked up a fumble and ran 24 yards into the end zone. Colorado State went ahead for good after a long punt return as a six-yard run by Henri Childs made it 21-14 with 4:01 left in the third. New Mexico (5-5, 4-3) closed within 21-17 when Vladimir Borombozin capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal. Naughton kicked a 19-yard field goal with 5:02 left for the final margin. Duan Ruff rushed 19 times for 65 yards and Childs gained 39 yards on 12 carries for Colorado State. Kelly was 15-of-33 for 255 yards and his five interceptions tied the school record set by Barry Garrison in 1987. The Lobos had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the seventh time in the last eight meetings with the Rams.
