HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Rice is the second best rushing team in the nation and against Texas El-Paso, it used the ground game en route to 27-13 victory that gave the Owls eight wins for the first time since 1953.

Quarterback Kyle Herm rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries for Rice, which gained 293 of its 350 total yards on the ground.

Herm gave the Owls (8-3, 5-2 WAC) a 7-0 lead with a 10-yard TD scamper with 10:40 left in the first quarter and also reached the end zone on runs of six and nine yards.

On the drive before his final score, Herm ripped off runs of 24 and 20 yards. His total was the best rushing performance by an Owl since Chad Richardson's 224 yards against Colorado State in 1998.

UTEP (2-8, 1-6) cut the deficit to 10-7 when Wesley Phillips found Terrance Minor for a four-yard TD pass. But the Owls exploited the Miners' defense throughout.

Rice finished unbeaten (5-0) at home for the first time since 1949, but road losses to Louisiana Tech and Fresno State might have cost it a bowl berth.

The Owls have not made a postseason appearance since the 1961 BlueBonnet Bowl, when they lost to Kansas.

Phillips finished 16-of-33 with 227 yards for the Miners, who have dropped six straight.
