TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Jason Johnson threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another as Arizona built a big early lead and defeated Pac-10 Conference rival Arizona State, 34-21. The Wildcats (5-6, 2-6 Pac-10) concluded their first season under coach John Mackovic by defeating their archrival for the first time in three tries. Delvon Flowers carried 20 times for 138 yards and two scores for Arizona State (4-6, 1-6), which dropped out of bowl contention. Johnson, who completed 18-of-29 passes, opened the scoring with a 19-yard TD pass to Bobby Wade with 8:31 remaining in the quarter and followed with a 6-yard TD run just under five minutes later. Clarence Farmer capped the opening quarter with 20-yard TD run to give the Wildcats a 20-0 lead. Andrew Walter got the Sun Devils on the board with a 19-yard strike to Donnie O'Neal in the second quarter. The Sun Devils pulled within a touchdown at the start of the third on Flowers' 33-yard scoring run. But the Wildcats responded with Johnson's 10-yard TD pass to Malosi Leonard with 3:15 to play in the third quarter. The Wildcats sealed the win when safety Brandon Nash picked off Jeff Krohn's pass and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown, giving Arizona a 34-14 cushion. Flowers scored again on a 3-yard run midway through the final quarter. The Sun Devils, who will not play in a bowl game for the first time since 1996, conclude their first season under Dirk Koetter next week against UCLA.
