PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- California sent Tom Holmoe out with a victory by handing Rutgers yet another defeat.

Freshman Terrell Williams ran for 185 yards and a touchdown as the Golden Bears avoided their first winless season since 1897 with a 20-10 triumph over the Scarlet Knights.

The Golden Bears (1-10) snapped a 13-game losing streak in their final game under Holmoe, who announced his resignation, effective at the end of the season, on November 4. In five years at California, Holmoe was 16-39.

Williams, who carried 36 times, opened the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run before the Bears made it 14-0 later in the first quarter on a 40-yard TD pass from Kyle Boller to LeShaun Ward.

Boller completed 15-of-26 for 193 yards and was intercepted once.

Mark Jensen added field goals of 22 yards in the second quarter and 37 yards in the fourth.

The Scarlet Knights ended their first season under coach Greg Schiano with a 2-9 record and a four-game losing streak.

Rutgers freshman Ryan Cubit completed 11-of-26 passes for 142 yards and was sacked five times. He cut California's lead to 17-10 with a 15-yard TD pass to L.J. Smith early in the third quarter.
