PASADENA, California (Ticker) -- Senior Scott McEwan made the most of his first career start, throwing for 280 yards and three touchdowns to lead UCLA to a 52-42 win over Pac-10 Conference rival Arizona State. The Bruins (7-4, 4-4 Pac-10) snapped a four-game losing streak and enchanced their bowl chances, although there is no guarantee of an invitation. The Humanitarian and Silicon Valley Bowls are believed to be considering UCLA. McEwan was given the start over Cory Paus, who was demoted by coach Bob Toledo earlier this week for not disclosing an alcohol-related offense that took place earlier this year. McEwan completed TD passes of 62 yards in the second quarter and 39 yards in the third to Craig Bragg, who caught seven passes for 280 yards. Ed Ieremia-Stansbury caught a two-yard TD pass from McEwan early in the fourth quarter to give the Bruins a comfortable 52-28 lead. UCLA also did it on the ground with Akil Harris carrying 22 times for 138 yards. His one-yard TD run in the first quarter tied the game at 7-7. Teammate Manuel White carried 17 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Arizona State (4-7, 1-7) closed its first season under coach Dirk Koetter with five straight defeats. Andrew Walter of the Sun Devils completed 16-of-29 for 226 yards and two scores. The Bruins jumped to a 24-7 second-quarter lead with the help of Harris' TD run, an eight-yard TD run by White and McEwan's first TD pass to Bragg. The Sun Devils twice cut the lead to 10 points, but could get no closer. A 100-yard kickofff return by Tom Pace made it 31-21 with 9:55 left in the third quarter, but the Bruins answered on a nine-yard TD run by White. The game was rescheduled from September 15 due to the terrorist attacks and drew a crowd of 45,271 at the Rose Bowl, about half of capacity.
