HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Derrick Nix and Anthony Harris rushed for three touchdowns apiece as Southern Mississippi routed Jackson State, 55-7, in the season opener for both intrastate rivals.
After Jackson State closed within 10-7 on a 13-yard run by Tarnak Counslor 11 seconds into the second quarter, Curt Jones kicked a 47-yard field goal for Southern Mississippi (1-0).
Harris, Nix and Marvin Young each scored a touchdown before halftime to turn a close game into a rout. Young caught a 25-yard TD pass from Micky D'Angelo on the final play of the second quarter to make it 34-7.
Nix scored once in the third quarter and Harris twice in the fourth to complete the scoring.
D'Angelo completed 13-for-23 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown, while Jackson State's Robert Kent was 17-for-34 with two interceptions.
The Golden Eagles outgained the Tigers, 478 yards to 273.
