HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Derrick Nix and Anthony Harris each rushed for more than 100 yards, leading Southern Mississippi to a 33-14 victory over Memphis in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Nix ran for 196 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and Harris added 121 yards and a score on 27 attempts.
Southern Mississippi (3-0, 1-0 C-USA) wore down Memphis with a bruising ground attack that totaled 356 yards.
The Golden Eagles beat the Tigers for the ninth time in 10 meetings and took a 35-17-1 lead in the all-time series. Last season, Memphis took advantage of five turnovers to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series.
Memphis (1-2, 0-1) closed to 10-7 on Danny Wimprine's 72-yard TD pass to Antoine Harden with 5:08 left in the second quarter.
But Southern Miss scored 16 points, including a safety, in the final five minutes of the half to build a 26-7 lead at the intermission.
Nix ripped off a 70-yard TD run and after the safety, Micky D'Angelo found Marvin Young for an 24-yard TD pass with eight seconds left in the half.
D'Angelo completed 17-of-35 passes for 168 yards with an interception.
Wimprine connected on just 9-of-15 passes for 153 yards for the Tigers. DeAngelo Williams paced Memphis on the ground with 105 yards on 11 carries.
