IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Jermaine Lewis helped pick up the slack for the injured Fred Russell.
Lewis rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries as Iowa coasted to a 48-7 victory over Utah State to complete the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3-1 record.
Russell rushed for more than 100 yards in Iowa's first three games, but was sidelined with a shoulder injury. He was hardly missed against the overmatched Aggies (1-3).
The Hawkeyes jumped to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on Brad Banks' 12-yard TD pass to C.J. Jones and Edgar Cervantes' one-yard TD run. Banks made it 21-0 with a one-yard TD run early in the second period.
Utah State got on the board on Roger Robinson's 25-yard TD run, but Nate Kaeding kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Iowa a 24-7 halftime lead. Kaeding has made all 11 of his field goal attempts this season.
Iowa put away the contest with 24 unanswered points in the third quarter, scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns. Linebacker Mike Follett recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and tackle Jared Clauss pounced on a fumble in the end zone.
Banks completed 15-of-29 passes for 185 yards for the Hawkeyes, who rebounded from last week's 36-31 loss to Iowa State in which they squandered a 17-point halftime lead.
Jose Fuentes completed 21-of-36 passes for Utah State, which was held to just 21 yards on the ground.
