IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Brad Banks threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Clark with 67 seconds remaining as Iowa continued its surprising start with a 31-28 Big Ten Conference victory over Purdue.
On 4th-and-goal, Banks dropped back and avoided pressure before finding Clark wide open in the right of the end zone. Clark had just three receptions, but two went for touchdowns. He also had a 95-yard reception that gave Iowa (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) a 24-14 advantage with 2:37 left in the third quarter.
Purdue (3-3, 1-1) had a chance to tie the game or take the lead on the ensuing possession, but Kyle Orton's pass popped out of Taylor Stubblefield's hands at the 10-yard line and was intercepted by cornerback Adolphus Shelton.
Brandon Kirsch and Jon Goldsberry had touchdown runs in the fourth quarter for Purdue, which had won the previous two meetings with Iowa.
Banks completed 14-of-22 passes for 225 yards and Fred Russell carried 22 times for 109 yards as the Hawkeyes won their third straight game since a 36-31 defeat to Iowa State.
Purdue held a 30-14 advantage in first downs and outgained Iowa, 507-384. But the Boilermakers were intercepted twice and had a 22-yard field goal blocked with 80 seconds left in the second quarter. Antwan Allen returned the blocked field goal 85 yards to pull Iowa within 14-10.
Nate Keading kicked a 51-yard field goal to give the Hawkeyes a 3-0 lead with 3:49 left in the first quarter.
Orton hooked up with John Standeford for a 61-yard score, giving the Boilermakers a 7-3 advantage with 76 seconds to go in the opening quarter. Jerod Void capped an 11-play, 71-yard drive with a one-yard run to make it 14-3 with 11:15 left in the first half.
Iowa again capitalized on special teams, when safety Jermire Roberts recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to put the Hawkeyes ahead, 17-14, 2:12 into the third.
Kirsch, who had 49 yards on six carries, broke off a 16-yard run to pull Purudue within, 24-21, 4:37 into the fourth. Goldsberry's two-yard score capped a six-play, 67-yard drive with 5:45 remaining.
