LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (Ticker) -- Walter Taylor rushed for three touchdowns and Buck Pierce passed for two more as New Mexico manhandled Texas El Paso, 49-14.
Taylor ran for 62 yards and Eric Higgins 106 and one score for the Aggies (2-3), who gained 286 yards on the ground and limited the Miners (1-5) to 114.
New Mexico State scored three touchdowns in the opening 10 minutes and took a 35-7 advantage into halftime following Taylor's second TD, a one-yard run with 66 seconds remaining.
Pierce was 9-for-15 for 178 yards and no interceptions, while UTEP counterpart Orlando Cruz went 15-for-19 for 196 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Aggies won their fourth consecutive home game against the Miners, who dropped their 12th straight road contest, dating to 2000.
By virtue of its victory in the 88-year-old rivalry, New Mexico State received a pair of traveling trophies, the Silver Spade and the Brass Spittoon.
UTEP leads the all-time series, 46-33-2.
