TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Wide receiver Hugh Smith scored on a seven-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as South Florida posted a 16-13 victory over Southern Mississippi.
South Florida (4-2) could not find the end zone until Smith's score with 9:31 remaining. Southern Mississippi had a chance to tie down the stretch but Curt Jones missed a 44-yard field goal as time expired.
Southern Miss (4-2) took a 7-3 lead on a nine-yard TD pass from Dustin Almond to Terrell Browden. The Golden Eagles maintained the lead until the fourth quarter as Almond completed 24-of-39 passes for 258 yards.
Santiago Gramatica booted three field goals for the Bulls, including a 34-yarder that cut their deficit to 13-9 with just over a minute left in the third quarter. A 39-yard punt return by DeAndrew Rubin set up Smith's go-ahead score.
Golden Eagles running back Derrick Nix carried 21 times for 126 yards, good for 3,134 in his career and second on the school's all-time list. Nix passed Sammy Winder and is 461 yards behind Ben Garry.
South Florida's Marquel Blackwell completed 20-of-37 passes for 246 yards.
