SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Brad Van Pelt rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another to lead Colorado State past slumping Utah, 28-20, in a Mountain West Conference game.
Van Pelt threw an 11-yard pass to Matt Bartz for a touchdown with 7:19 left in the first quarter, then ran for a nine-yard score 1:46 into the second period to build a 14-0 lead for the Rams (6-2, 2-0 Mountain West).
Utah (2-5, 0-2) came back with a pair of one-yard quarterback sneaks for touchdowns from Brett Elliott, but Van Pelt scored again on a two-yard run with 4:29 left in the third quarter to give Colorado State the margin it needed.
The Utes outgained the Rams, 481-252, but could not finish off their drives. They went just 4-for-16 on third down conversions.
Elliott completed 21-of-40 passes for 265 yards and two interceptions. Paris Jackson caught six passes for 128 yards.
Van Pelt was 10-of-18 for a modest 94 yards. Justin Holland also saw some action under center for Colorado State, completing 3-of-5 for 46 yards.
Utah has lost five straight games since opening the season with back-to-back victories over Utah State and Indiana.
Colorado State has won the last five meetings between the teams and has not lost at Utah since 1993.
