PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Michael Sgroi kicked three field goals and Stanford forced three turnovers en route to a 16-6 Pac-10 Conference victory over Arizona.
Sgroi booted a 45-yard field goal early in the first quarter and had field goals of 27 and 21 yards in the fourth.
Following Sgroi's first field goal, Arizona (3-4, 0-3 Pac-10) drove to the Cardinal (2-4, 1-2) 39. But on 2nd-and-10, Jason Johnson was intercepted by sophomore cornerback Stanley Wilson.
Wilson returned it 52 yards and two plays later, Chris Lewis found Alex Smith across the middle for a 12-yard touchdown, which made it 10-0 with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter.
Johnson completed 19-of-30 passes for 244 yards, but was picked off three times. Arizona managed just a pair of first-half field goals by Bobby Gill and suffered its first loss at Stanford since 1985.
Lewis completed 14-of-27 passes for 126 yards, while Smith had eight catches for 120 yards.
