EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) -- Keith Robinson's 59-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining lifted Texas El Paso to a 38-35 Homecoming Day victory over Western Athletic Conference foe Rice.
Omar Duarte threw two touchdown passes and Howard Jackson ran for 166 yards and one score as the Miners (2-5, 1-2 WAC) rallied from an early 21-7 deficit to snap a five-game losing streak.
It was UTEP's first victory in 13 games against a Division 1-A opponent since defeating Tulsa on September 29, 2001. The Miners began the season with a 42-12 triumph over Division 1-AA Sacramento State.
Thomas Howard put the Miners ahead, 35-28, three minutes into the fourth quarter when he picked up a fumble and ran 54 yards for a touchdown. Marcus Battle evened the score with an 18-yard TD reception from Kyle Herm with 2:51 to play.
The Miners managed just 25 yards on 10 plays before Robinson's dramatic kick, which was 14 yards longer than his prior career best.
Herm was just 5-of-10 for 137 yards but had two TD tosses for Rice (2-5, 1-3), which had won its previous two games. The Owls attempted just 16 passes but ran the ball 59 times for 225 yards.
Chris Francies had six catches for 104 yards for the Miners, who had lost each of their last five contests by at least 25 ponts.
