FORT WORTH, Texas (Ticker) -- Freshman Lonta Hobbs rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns as TCU won its seventh straight game and moved into first place in Conference USA with a 37-7 victory over Southern Mississippi.
The win vaulted the Horned Frogs (7-1, 4-1 C-USA) one-half game ahead of Southern Miss (5-3, 3-1), Louisville and UAB in league play.
TCU broke open the game in the third quarter, scoring 24 unanswered points capped by touchdown runs of 53 and 13 yards by Hobbs, who carried 15 times.
The freshman gave TCU a 13-0 lead at 9:14 of the second quarter with a 15-yard TD run.
The Golden Eagles responded with their only score of the game, a 48-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Almond to Marvin Young early in the third quarter that cut the deficit to 13-7.
Almond completed just 9-of-27 passes for 110 yards and an interception that was returned by safety Jared Smitherman 37 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
TCU recorded a season-high nine sacks, including four by linebacker LaMarcus McDonald, who had 16 tackles.
Nick Browne contributed three field goals for the Horned Frogs, including a 48-yarder that extended the lead to 16-7 in the third period.
