CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Charlie Whitehurst threw for four touchdowns and 274 yards to lead Clemson to a 42-12 Atlantic Coast Conference rout of North Carolina.

Whitehurst got Clemson (6-4, 4-3 ACC) on the board with an 83-yard TD strike to Airese Currie to cut the deficit to 9-7 in the first quarter. Bernard Rambert scored on a three-yard run and Whitehurst added a 58-yard TD pass to J.J. McKelvey for a 21-9 lead at halftime.

The Tigers continued to pour it on as Whitehurst added a pair of short TD passes in the third quarter to fullback Chad Jasmin. Tye Hill's 10-yard TD run in the fourth quarter provided the final margin.

Clemson racked up 530 yards of total offense, including 256 on the ground. Rambert rushed 19 times for 106 yards and Hill carried 14 times for 105, marking the first time the Tigers have had a 100-yard rusher this season.

C.J. Stephens' 17-yard TD pass to Bobby Blizzard in the first quarter was the lone touchdown for the Tar Heels. Stephens completed 15-of-28 passes for 150 yards and was sacked four times.

North Carolina (2-8, 0-6) lost its home finale to fall to 0-6 at Kenan Stadium this season, its first winless home slate since 1952. The Tar Heels must win at Duke or Florida State to avoid a winless conference mark for the first time since 1989.
