BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Ticker) -- Freshman Darrel Hackney become just the third quarterback in Alabama-Birmingham history to pass for more than 400 yards, collecting 424 in a 36-29 Conference USA victory over East Carolina.
Hackney completed 20-of-34 passes and three touchdowns without an interception. The highlight of his day was a 94-yard touchdown strike to Willie Quinnie 2:18 into the second quarter.
Hackney tossed a 12-yard TD pass to Roddy White with 1:31 left in the third quarter to give UAB a 29-17 lead.
The Pirates (3-6, 3-2) came back to tie the game with a touchdown, safety and field goal, but Kendal Gibson snapped the tie with a one-yard touchdown run with a minute remaining. Gibson rushed for 43 yards on six carries.
Art Brown led East Carolina's offense with 94 yards on 16 carries and also caught a four-yard TD pass from Desmo Robinson in the fourth quarter.
UAB, which blew a 20-13 lead against Southern Mississippi last week, avoided its first two-game losing streak at home since falling to Central Florida and Cincinnati in 1996. The Blazers have won their last three meetings with East Carolina.
After three consecutive bowl appearances, the Pirates have struggled this season after losing quarterback David Garrard. They have lost three of their last four games.
