Dan Orner kicked a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the game as North Carolina rallied for a 23-21 victory over the Blue Devils in a battle of winless teams in the ACC.
The victory allowed North Carolina (3-9, 1-7) to end a disappointing season on a high note, while Duke finished 0-8 in the ACC for the third straight year. The Blue Devils have dropped 25 consecutive conference games.
North Carolina posted its 13th straight win over Duke to increase its lead in the all-time series to 51-34-4.
The Blue Devils came painfully close to ending three years of futility in the ACC, taking a 21-20 lead on Adam Smith's 33-yard touchdown pass to Senterrio Landrum with 1:03 remaining.
North Carolina answered by driving 45 yards in seven plays to set up Orner's game-winning field goal.
Darian Durant completed 21-of-35 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown for the Tar Heels, while Jacque Lewis rushed for 102 yards and a score on 17 carries.
Smith completed 12-of-17 passes for 177 yards and two TDs for the Blue Devils (2-10, 0-8). Alex Wade paced the Blue Devils on the ground with 138 yards and a TD on 25 carries.
North Carolina had taken a 20-14 lead on Durant's 37-yard TD strike to Jarwarski Pollock with 13:36 left in the contest.
