The Star	Clinton Portis, RB, Miami Rushed for career-high 131 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns, all from inside the 5-yard line.
The Skinny	The Panthers have still never beaten a top-ranked team. Not that this one was a surprise. Ken Dorsey was serviceable (18-of-32, 208 yards) but good enough to set up Portis for three scores. Pitt scored on its first drive and held a brief 7-6 lead, but the Hurricanes flexed with a 20-point first-quarter and cruised from there.

The Star	Rex Grossman, QB, Florida Tied a career high with five TD passes, completing 22-of-31 for 393 yards (a personal best).
The Skinny	Payback, and then some. Miss. State beat Florida 47-35 last year, ending the Gators' 72-game winning streak against unranked opponents. Florida never gave MSU a chance this time, building a 35-0 halftime lead. Grossman became the first Gator QB to record four straight 300+ yards passing games.

		No. 3 Oklahoma 38	at Norman, Okla.
		No. 11 Kansas State 37	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Antwone Savage, WR, Oklahoma Only two catches -- for 138 yards. Both were touchdowns. Can you say Randy Moss?
The Skinny	A 74-yard TD pass from Nate Hybl to Savage gave OU a seemingly comfortable 35-14 third-quarter lead. The Wildcats rallied behind QB Ell Roberson, who rushed for 2 TDs and passed for one to close within 38-35 with 2:02 left. KSU didn't try an onside kick, OU took a safety and ran the clock out. The Sooners are 8-1 against ranked teams under coach Bob Stoops.
The Future	Oklahoma (3-0): Saturday vs. Texas (in Dallas) Kansas State (2-1): Saturday vs. Colorado
		No. 4 Nebraska 36	at Columbia, Mo.
		Missouri 3	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Eric Crouch, QB, Nebraska Only threw for 124 yards, but he rushed for 191 on 17 carries, including a school-record 95-yard score.
The Skinny	Late in the third, Nebraska was not exactly manhandling MU with a 16-3 lead. Then Crouch dropped back from his 5-yard line, escaped from being sacked for a safety and broke several tackles for the 95-yard TD run. The Cornhuskers tacked on two more scores from there. Missouri has not defeated Nebraska in 23 straight tries.

		No. 5 Texas 42	at Austin, Texas
		Texas Tech 7	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Ivan Williams, RB, Texas The 'Horns pounded at Tech with Williams all night. He finished with 152 yards and 2 TDs on 25 carries.
The Skinny	Highly criticized Texas QB Chris Simms was a model of precision. He completed 22 of 27 passes for 238 yards and a score (he did have one INT). Texas jumped to a quick 14-0 lead after TD runs by Williams and Simms and never let Texas Tech factor into the game.
The Future	Texas (4-0): Saturday vs. Oklahoma (in Dallas) Texas Tech (1-2) Saturday vs. Kansas
		No. 6 Oregon 38	at Logan, Utah
		Utah State 21	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Joey Harrington, QB, Oregon Not really Heisman-like, but it wasn't bad. He completed 14-of-20 passes for 206 yards and 2 TDs.
The Skinny	Oregon struggled more than it should have with Utah State, which stayed in the game behind the strong arm of QB Jose Fuentes (16-of-28, 240 yards, 2 TDs). Utah State put a scare in the Ducks with Fuentes TD pass to Gary Coleman to get the Aggies with three points, 24-21. Oregon answered on a Maurice Morris 10-yard run to seal the win.
The Future	Oregon (4-0): Saturday at Arizona Utah State (0-4): Friday at BYU
		No. 7 Tennessee 26	at Knoxville, Tenn.
		No. 14 LSU 18	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Kelley Washington, WR, Tennessee Walk-on freshman was phenomenal. He caught 11 passes for 256 yards (a school record) and one TD.
The Skinny	Washington accounted for 82 percent of the Vols passing yards and each of his 11 catches went for first downs. Tennessee took a 26-7 lead early in the fourth quarter, but LSU rallied behind QB Rohan Davie (21-of-43, 346 yards, 2 TDs). After a Davie TD pass, the Vols defense held LSU to a FG and never relinquished the lead.
The Man	Tennessee (3-0): Saturday vs. Georgia LSU (2-1): Saturday vs. Florida
		No. 8 Virginia Tech 46	at Blacksburg, Va.
		Central Florida 14	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Keith Burnell, RB, Virginia Tech Still not Lee Suggs, but not bad. Burnell rushed for 70 yards on 20 carries and a pair of TDs.
The Skinny	After Central Florida took a 7-0 lead, Virginia Tech woke up and woke up angry. The Hokies answered with 19 points in the second quarter, including rushing TDs by Burnell and Kevin Jones, a field goal and a safety. Virginia Tech held the UCF to 29 rushing yards at 1.2 per carry while the Hokies rushed for 221 yards.
The Future	Virginia Tech (3-0): Saturday at West Virginia Central Florida (1-2): Saturday vs. UAB
		Clemson 47	at Atlanta
		No. 9 Georgia Tech 44	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Woody Dantzler, QB, Clemson Accounted for 418 of Clemson's 502 yards: 254 yards and two TDs passing, 164 yards and two TDs rushing.
The Skinny	Playing without three WRs because of injuries, Dantzler carried the Tigers nearly by himself. A late FG by Georgia Tech's Luke Manget sent the game to OT, where the Yellow Jackets were held to another FG. On Clemson's possession, Danztler scrambled for an 11-yard TD and the win. This was the sixth straight year this game has been decided by three points.
The Future	Clemson (3-1): Thursday (10/11) at N.C. State Georgia Tech (2-1): Saturday at Duke
		No. 10 Fresno State 38	at Fresno, Calif.
		Louisiana Tech 28	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Paris Gaines, RB, Fresno State Had a career-high 203 yards and 2 TDs, including a 58-yarder. Also a 37-yard TD rec. late to ensure victory.
The Skinny	Once the hunter, Fresno State became the hunted in its first home game since upsetting Oregon State. La. Tech used the big play to hang with the Bulldogs, and trailed just 31-28 with 9:00 left. But David Carr had plenty of offense to lead Fresno to its 17th consecutive home victory, the third-longest in the nation.
The Future	Fresno State (5-0): Saturday (10/13) at Colorado State Louisiana Tech (1-2): Saturday vs. San Jose State
		No. 12 UCLA 38	at Corvallis, Ore.
		No. 19 Oregon State 7	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	DeShaun Foster, RB, UCLA Continuing his Heisman campaign, Foster controlled the game with 31 rushes for 146 yards and 3 TDs.
The Skinny	No letdown from the Bruins this time. The much-improved UCLA defense was one 63-yard TD run away from posting its first shutout of the season. The Bruins held the Beavers to 102 passing yards and 218 total yards. Besides Foster's dominating rushing performance, UCLA QB Cory Paus hooked up with Brian Poli-Dixon six times for 107 yards and a pair of TDs.
The Future	UCLA (4-0): Saturday vs. Washington Oregon State (1-2): Saturday at Washington State
		No. 13 Washington 31	at Berkeley, Calf.
		California 28	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Paul Arnold, WR, Washington He only caught four passes, but they were good for 111 yards and he scored on two of them.
The Skinny	Scary win for the Huskies. Cal staked an early 14-point lead behind two Kyle Boller TD passes. Washington slowly made its way back before scoring twice in the fourth quarter to eke out the win. Husky QB Cody Pickett had a nice outing with 280 yards and two TDs on 15-of-27 passing. Boller had four TDs for the Bears.
The Future	Washington (3-0): Saturday at USC California (0-4): Sat. (10/13) vs. Oregon
		No. 15 South Carolina 37	at Columbia, S.C.
		Alabama 36	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Phil Petty, QB, South Carolina Probably his best game to date. Threw for 289 yards (17-of-31) and 3 TDs, including the game-winner.
The Skinny	Fans stormed the field to tear down the goalposts after South Carolina's first-ever victory against Alabama. The Tide had dominated the game (529 total yards), but the Gamecocks scored two TDs in the final 6:30 for the come-from-behind victory. South Carolina managed just 84 yards rushing to Alabama's 303.
The Future	South Carolina (4-0): Saturday vs. Kentucky Alabama (2-2): Saturday vs. UTEP (in Birmingham)
		No. 16 Northwestern 27	at Evanston, Ill.
		No. 23 Michigan State 26	• Game recaps • Game summary
The Star	Zak Kustok, QB, Northwestern A one-man gang: 233 yards passing (23-of-40), 2 TDs and 115 yards rushing with a TD.
The Skinny	Northwestern's David Wasielewski hit 47-yard FG with no time left to win it after MSU's Herb Haygood returned a kickoff 84 yards for a TD to put the Spartans ahead with 18 seconds left. Before that, the 'Cats took a 24-20 lead on a TD pass with 29 seconds to play. Northwestern starts 3-0 for the first time since 1962.
The Future	Northwestern (3-0): Saturday at Ohio State Michigan State (2-1): Sat. (10/13) vs. Iowa
		No. 17 Michigan 45	at Ann Arbor, Mich.
		No. 22 Illinois 20	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Marquise Walker, WR, Michigan Walker stretched the field for Michigan, catching six balls for 110 yards and a TD.
The Skinny	An aggressive Michigan run defense denied Illinois its chance to go 4-0 for the first time since 1951. The Wolverines held the Illini to just 44 rushing yards, and though Illinois gained 271 yards through the air, Michigan didn't give up a passing TD. Eight different WRs caught at least one pass from Michigan QB John Navarre.
The Future	Michigan (3-1): Saturday at Penn State Illinois (3-1): Saturday vs. Minnesota
		No. 18 Florida State 48	at Tallahassee, Fla.
		Wake Forest 24	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Chris Rix, QB, Florida State Took advantage of weak Wake Forest secondary: 16-of-22, 332 yards and 3 TDs.
The Skinny	After Florida State's worst regular-season loss since 1983, they had to start somewhere. Rix and the Seminoles left no doubt, erupting to a 42-14 halftime lead behind three TD passes and two rushing scores by Nick Maddox, who finished with 90 yards on 15 carries. Florida State has won 37 straight home games.
The Future	Florida State (3-1): Sat. (10/13) vs. Miami Wake Forest (2-2): Saturday vs. N.C. State
		No. 20 BYU 35	at Las Vegas
		UNLV 31	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Brandon Doman, QB, BYU Good enough to get the job done: 23-of-37 for 281 yards and one TD. Came up big in the game-winning drive.
The Skinny	Trailing 31-28 with 2:26 to play, Doman led his team on a 92-yard drive -- the last 21 yards of which was covered by a Doman TD run -- to win the game. UNLV coach John Robinson, who won a national title with USC, is 0-4 for the first time in his career.
The Future	BYU (4-0): Friday vs. Utah State UNLV (0-4): Saturday at Nevada
		No. 24 Purdue 35	at Minneapolis
		Minnesota 28 (OT)	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Brandon Hance, QB, Purdue The freshman was reminiscent of his predecessor, Drew Brees: 22-of-36, 303 yards, 3 TDs.
The Skinny	Purdue's Travis Dorsch hit a 48-yard field goal as time ran out to send the game to OT, where the Boilermakers scored on a Hance 19-yard pass to John Standeford. Minnesota was unable to score, giving the defending Big Ten champions a narrow escape. Hance hit WR Seth Morales for two TDs on the day.
The Future	Purdue (3-0): Saturday vs. Iowa Minnesota (1-3): Saturday at Illinois
		No. 25 Toledo 41	at Toledo, Ohio
		Northern Illinois 20	• Game recap • Game summary
The Star	Chester Taylor, RB, Toldeo Taylor fought through a shoulder injury for 135 yards and three TDs on 32 rushes.
The Skinny	Toledo jumped to a 19-0 lead after QB Tavares Bolden tossed TD passes to Chris Holmes and Manny Johnson and Taylor ran one in. The Rockets struggled after that, though, as North Illinois scored 10 points in the second and third quarters before Taylor led the way to a pair of Toledo TDs in the fourth quarter.
The Future	Toledo (4-0): Saturday at Ohio Northern Illinois (2-2): Saturday vs. Marshall
