Game recaps
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Ken Dorsey, QB, Miami
Basically what you'd expect against such a weak opponent: 18-of-30, 299 yards and 2 TDs.
|
| The Skinny |
Glorified practice for next week's Miami-Florida State game? No one bothered to tell Troy State QB Brock Butter, who capped an 11-play, 80 drive with a 2-yard TD pass to LeBarron Black to tie the game 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Miami saw enough of that, though, and ripped off 31 straight points to pull away.
|
| The Future |
Miami (4-0): Saturday at Florida State
Troy State (1-3): Saturday at Mississippi State

Game summary
|
| The Star |
Rex Grossman, QB, Florida
Give him the Heisman now. Follows last week's 5 TDs with 5 more and 464 passing yards, a Florida record.
|
| The Skinny |
Grossman broke Danny Wuerffel's 1996 record of 462 yards against Arkansas. Were "experts" really saying LSU could figure into the BCS race? Grossman proved otherwise, throwing for 319 yards and 4 TDs by halftime. Grossman has thrown for at least 300 yards in five straight games, another school record. Florida finished with 632 yards in total offense.

Florida (5-0): Saturday at Auburn
LSU (2-2): Saturday at Kentucky

Game summary
|
| The Star |
Jason White, QB, Oklahoma
After starting QB Nate Hybl went down, White didn't lose the game. Finished 16-of-23, 111 yards.
|
| The Skinny |
Not surprisingly, defense dominated the Red River Shootout. Much-criticized Texas QB Chris Simms was awful. He completed 24-of-43 passes for 198 yards, but tossed 4 INTs and no TDs. The aggressive OU defense hurried Simms into bad passes and sacked him five times. The Sooners' rush defense was even better, holding Texas to 58 yards on the ground.
|
| The Future |
Oklahoma (5-0): Saturday at Kansas
Texas (4-1): Saturday at Oklahoma State

Game recap
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Eric Crouch, QB, Nebraska
Rushed for 4 TDs and broke the NCAA record for career rushing TDs by a QB with 51.
|
| The Skinny |
Nebraska is rolling right along in the creampuff portion of its schedule. NU most likely won't face a challenge until it sees OU in three weeks. As usual, Nebraska got up early and cruised. The Huskers led 41-0 at the half, so ISU's 14 third-quarter points were inconsequential. |
| The Future |
Nebraska (6-0): Saturday at Baylor
Iowa State (3-1): Saturday at Missouri

Game recaps
Game summary
|
| The Star |
David Greene, QB, Georgia
Redshirt frosh hit on 22-of-35 passes, 307 yards and 2 TDs, including the game-winner with 5 seconds left.
|
| The Skinny |
Georgia's Billy Bennett kicked 31-yard FG to give the Bulldogs a 20-17 lead with 5:41 left. Georgia seemed to have UT bottled up, until Casey Clausen tossed a short pass to Travis Stephens, who rumbled 62 yards to score, giving UT a 24-20 lead with 41 seconds to play. Then Greene calmly drove Georgia 59 yards in 35 seconds for the winning TD pass to Verron Haynes.

Georgia (3-1): Saturday at Vanderbilt
Tennessee (3-1): Sat. (10/20) at Alabama

Game summary
| The Star |
Joey Harringon, QB, Oregon
Though the Heisman campaign has grown a bit sluggish, Harrington had his best game of the season, throwing for 279 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for three more.
|
| The Skinny |
After beating up on some soft competition in the first three games of the John Mackovic era, Arizona has come back to Earth. The Wildcats have allowed 111 points in losing two consecutive Pac-10 games. Oregon gained 607 yards of total offense in matching the school record for most points in a conference game. Both Onterrio Smith and Maurice Morris had 100-yard rushing night as the Ducks declawed the 'Cats.

| The Future |
Oregon (5-0): Saturday at California
Arizona (3-2): Saturday at Oregon State

Game recap
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Keith Burnell, RB, Virginia Tech
Easier to run when your defense posts shutouts: 102 yards on 21 and 2 TDs. |
| The Skinny |
Virginia Tech's third shutout this season. The Hokies have given up 24 points in five games, half as many as the 1999 Sugar Bowl team gave up through five games. Offensively, Virginia Tech did its damage early, scoring three rushing touchdowns in the first half. Hokies coach Frank Beamer had most of his starters out by the start of the 4th quarter.
|
| The Future |
Virginia Tech (5-0): Saturday vs. Boston College
West Virginia (2-3): Saturday at Notre Dame

Game summary
|
| The Star |
Taylor Barton, QB, Washington
Less than amazing numbers (12-of-20, 200 yards, 2 TDs), but he was calm on the game-winning drive.
|
| The Skinny |
In typical UW fashion, John Anderson kicked a 33-yard field goal to win the game as time expired. The Huskies have made come-from-behind victories commonplace in Seattle. They have rallied in the fourth quarter for 16 of their 21 wins under coach Rick Neuheisel, including defeats of Michigan and California this season.
|

Washington (4-0): Saturday at UCLA
USC (1-4): Saturday vs. Arizona State

Game recap
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Chris Brown, RB, Colorado
He didn't get into the end zone, but the Buffs pounded away at K-State with Brown: 32 carries, 107 yards.
|
| The Skinny |
All of the sudden Colorado is a contender for the Big XII North title. The Buffs are 4-0 since an opening-day loss to surprise Fresno State. Colorado's defense continued to dominate today, recording six sacks and limited the Wildcats to 96 yards passing. Shut out through three quarters, KSU QB Ell Roberson scored a TD on a 2-yard run in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.
|
| The Future |
Colorado (4-1): Saturday vs. Texas A&M
Kansas State (2-2): at Texas Tech

Game recap
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Derek Watson, RB, South Carolina
Carried the load in the blowout with 135 yards on 16 rushes. He didn't score any TDs, but there was no need.
|
| The Skinny |
South Carolina put away the doubt in this one early. Gamecocks RB Andrew Pinnock scored on a dive play from the one, QB Phil Petty then ran one in and passed for another to give USC a 21-0 lead after one quarter. The Gamecocks cruised from there. South Carolina is off to its best conference start ever at 4-0.
|

South Carolina (5-0): Saturday at Arkansas
Kentucky (1-4): Saturday vs. LSU

Game summary
|
| The Star |
Jonathan Wells, RB, Ohio State
Rushed for 179 yards and 3 TDs, including a 71-yard breakaway TD run on the second play of the game.
|
| The Skinny |
No miracle finish for Northwestern this time. The Wildcats did rally from a 38-7 fourth-quarter deficit, but they didn't have enough offense in the end. Big win for first-year OSU coach Jim Tressell, whose Buckeyes have a favorable schedule remaining. Ohio State has beaten Northwestern in 22 straight meetings.
|
| The Future |
Ohio State (3-1): Saturday vs. Wisconsin
Northwestern (3-1): Saturday vs. Minnesota

Game summary
|
| The Star |
B.J. Askew, RB, Michigan
Though he didn't score, Askew was the workhorse for Michigan today: 27 carries for 125 yards.
|
| The Skinny |
Penn State coach Joe Paterno is still in search of his first win this season and his 323rd career victory, which would tie him with Bear Bryant for the most Division I-A wins. Instead of tying the Bear, JoePa suffered his first home shutout of his career and his first 0-4 start. The Nittany Lions will need more then 53 rushing yards to get a win this year.
|
| The Future |
Michigan (4-1): Saturday vs. Purdue
Penn State (0-4): Sat. (10/20) at Northwestern

Game recaps
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Joe Burns, RB, Georgia Tech
Burns got loose for 122 yards on 24 carries (5.1 yards a carry) and scored on runs of 17 yards and 1 yard.
|
| The Skinny |
Behind Georgia Tech QB George Godsey through the air and Burns on the ground and a Luke Magnet FG, the Yellow Jackets built a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. The Blue Devils showed some heart and cut the lead to 17-10 before the Georgia Tech pulled away. Don't feel sorry for Duke (17 straight losses), though. They may go undefeated in basketball.

| The Star |
Lucas Staley, RB, BYU
Ho hum. Just another five touchdowns. Four rushing, one receiving. He has 12 on the year, 2nd in the nation.
|
| The Skinny |
Nice defense. But what did you expect? Utah State actually took a 27-21 halftime lead before Staley (207 yards rushing) scored three times in the third quarter. The Cougars pulled away behind BYU QB Brandon Doman's 7-of-8 passing for 110 yards in the fourth quarter. He finished 24-of-34, 293 yards and 4 TDs.

| The Star |
Bandon Hance, QB, Purdue
Not as dramatic as last week, but the frosh led Purdue to another 4th-quarter, come-from-behind victory.
|
| The Skinny |
The Hawkeyes held Purdue to less than 100 yards of total offense and no offense touchdowns through three quarters. Then Hance (17-of-34, 147 yards, 1 INT) capped a 60-yard drive with a 4-yard TD scramble to give Purdue a 20-14 lead with 12:07 in the game. Purdue has come from behind to win nine of coach Joe Tiller's 37 wins at the shcool.

Game recap
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Tavares Bolden, QB, Toledo
Did most of his damage in the first half, finished 31-of-39 for 387 yards and 2 TDs.
|
| The Skinny |
Toledo RB Chester Taylor entered the game as the nation's scoring leader and third-leading rusher, but wasn't really a factor after an early TD. The Rockets had plenty offense with Bolden, who hit eight different receivers (four of whom has at least four catches) for a 12.3 yards-per-catch average. Ohio scored 29 straight points in the second half to take a brief lead before Toledo pulled away.

| The Future |
Toledo (5-0): Sat. (10/20) at Ball State
Ohio (0-4): Saturday at Central Michigan

Game recaps
Game summary
|
| The Star |
Mark Farris, QB, Texas A&M
He wasn't spectacular, but no one was. Farris finished 21-of-36 for 264 yards and one lost fumble.
|
| The Skinny |
Perhaps the least intimidating 5-0 team in the nation, Texas A&M struggled to win this one. Baylor jumped to a 10-7 lead behind a Jonathon Golden 1-yard TD and a Adam Stiles 50-yard field goal. The Aggies turned up the intensity on defense in the second half and scored enough to stay undefeated. With Colorado upsetting KSU, next week's A&M-CU game is huge.

Texas A&M (5-0): Saturday at Colorado
Baylor (2-2): Saturday vs. Nebraska

Game summary
| The Star |
Bruce Perry, RB, Maryland
Ran for another 143 yards (821 for the year), scored a TD and caught a career-high eight passes for 51 yards.
|
| The Skinny |
The Terps have matched theirs wins from a year ago and is off to their best start in 23 years. After leading 24-7 at the half, Virginia scored twice to close to within 24-21. The Terps responded with a TD pass from Shaun Hill to Jafar Williams and a Perry TD run. Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen is the first UM coach to start his first full season 5-0.
