AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn attempted to improve its lethargic
running game by grabbing a commitment from the top junior college
tailback in the nation.
The Tigers received the commitment Monday from Rudi Johnson of
Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan. Johnson was
named the national junior college player of the year last week.
Johnson rushed for 2,224 yards and 31 touchdowns this season. He
ran for 373 yards and seven TDs in Butler's 49-35 national
championship win over Dixie College on Dec. 4.
Johnson becomes the third player from Butler to commit to the
Tigers. He joins wide receiver Sam Breeden, who committed with him
on Monday, and quarterback Daniel Cobb, formerly at Georgia.
The Tigers also hope to receive a commitment from Butler
offensive lineman Howard Duncan. If Duncan does commit, that would
make four of Auburn's 10 commitments Butler players.
Meanwhile, Auburn also looked to end its kicking woes with a
commitment from Philip Yost of Auburn High School. The Tigers'
coaching staff is hoping Yost will replace Damon Duval as
placekicker next season. Duval will be a sophomore next season,
but had run-ins with coach Tommy Tuberville all year and was often
erratic.
