Tale of three QBs Updated: Wednesday December 20, 2000 11:24 PM
As a rule, running backs do not make their oral commitment decisions quickly. Only one of SuperPrep's top 10 ballcarriers have made their decisions public. By contrast, quarterbacks often make their letter of intent decisions very quickly. Ten of SuperPrep's top 14 QB prospects are already orally committed to schools. There are, however, these following three excellent signal callers still on the market: Nic Costa, 5-11, 190, 4.45, Beaverton Aloha, Ore. Final five-game stats (missed four games due to a left ankle bone contusion): 1,000 yards passing, 10 TDs. "I move well," said Costa. "I have good pocket moves and I can get outside and make things happen. I also have good touch and accuracy." Costa favors PURDUE (Dec. 8 official trip -- "I got along with everyone and it seemed like they were having fun in practice," he said. "I could tell that they wanted to be there and that it wasn't just a job for them -- they actually had fun.") just slightly over ARIZONA (Jan. 12, "I spoke to coach [John] Mackovic and he seems nice, but it's like starting over. I won't have an opinion until I go there. I don't have a relationship with him as I did the old staff."), UCLA (already visited, "It's a good system for QBs and they aren't that far away. Plus, the weather is great."), NOTRE DAME (Jan. 19), TENNESSEE and FLORIDA STATE. All have offered. "I like WASHINGTON, but not enough to spend four years of my life there," said Costa. "It's just not my taste." Excellent student: 3.8 core GPA/1,130 SAT. Matt Henshaw, 6-4, 205, 4.7, Brentwood, Tenn. "I have good arm strength and am smart on the field," said Henshaw. "I make good decisions and am very competitive." Final 13-game (8-5) stats: 2,400 yards passing, 21 TDs, 13 picks; 300 yards rushing, four TDs. Henshaw still favors FSU (childhood favorite, Dec. 8 official trip -- "I love the coaches there," he said. "The atmosphere is unbelievable, and year in and year out, they are highly ranked.") over CLEMSON (Jan. 12 -- "I'll decide soon after my visit."). "I told the FSU coaches that CLEMSON would have to sweep me off my feet for me not to chose the 'Noles," said Henshaw. Ingle Martin, 6-4, 200, 4.6, Nashville Montgomery Bell, Tenn. Final 13-game (12-1, third state championship in a row) stats: 1,050 yards passing, eight TDs; 1,010 yards rushing, 12 TDs; seven of nine FGs; seven of seven PATs; 42 yards per punt. "I can throw on the run," Martin said. "I'm a mobile QB and I can be a drop-back passer. I'm very versatile and I can kick too." Martin favors FLORIDA (Jan. 19 official trip) slightly over TENNESSEE (Dec. 8 -- "Football is the main thing there," said Martin. "It's a different kind of football."), MISSISSIPPPI (Jan. 12, "I really like coach [David] Cutcliffe. He's an upfront guy who tells you what he thinks. It's refreshing. He's a great teacher."), LSU (Dec. 15), ALABAMA ("At least they have a coach.") and GEORGIA (canceled Dec. 8 trip -- "They have definitely moved down because of the change. Now, I have to see who they hire. I was very close to the [Jim] Donnan staff." For more detailed information on these and other players, visit www.superprep.com.
