Huskies make an impact

  Recruiting Watch - Allen Wallace

Two members of SuperPrep's Elite 50 team, running backs Maurice Hall and Jabari Davis, feel basically the same about their favorite school as they did before the season started.

However, the number one choice of California WR/DB Dominic Robinson, also an Elite 50 team member, has become more clouded based on his recent Seattle trip to visit the Huskies. The impact of the official visit is the single most overlooked factor in the recruiting process.

Dominic Robinson, DB/WR, 6-2, 187, 4.4, Diamond Bar, Calif.

FLORIDA STATE has been in the dominant position for this superlative athlete until just recently, when Robinson officially visited WASHINGTON (uncle Dana Hall played for the HUSKIES, then the 49ers) on December 15.

"WASHINGTON is not past FLORIDA STATE (WR/DB), but they aren't far behind. WASHINGTON has moved much closer," said Robinson. "I just liked the city, the surroundings and the players. I got along with the players. We kind of jelled together. It's like they are silently confident, like me. But they are still number two. If FSU is a 99, I'd say UW is a 98.5."

Trying to catch the frontrunners are TENNESSEE (DB, 1/14, "I really like DB coach Al Slade. We've talked for hours about playing DB.") with OREGON and GEORGIA TECH looking less likely.

"I can play either WR or DB. I don't care. But you don't find many corners my size," said Robinson.

Final 13 game (11-2) stats: 58 receptions, 1,000 yards, 8 TDs; 8 picks--3 returned for TDs.

Maurice Hall, RB, 5-10, 185, 4.4, Columbus Brookhaven, Ohio

Hall rushed for 1,750 yards as a sophomore. He gained another 1,315 and scored 18 TDs as a junior. This season's final 12 game (10-2) stats are even more impressive: 3,050 yards, 51 TDs; 8 receptions, 250 yds, 2 TDs.

In April, Hall said, "I am still open-minded but I would say I favor TENNESSEE slightly over OHIO STATE, FLORIDA STATE, PENN STATE, MIAMI, GEORGIA TECH and NOTRE DAME." By the time June rolled around, the Buckeyes had moved into the lead and now, John Cooper just needs to survive a round of January visits.

OHIO STATE (12/1 official trip--"I watched the OHIO STATE bowl practices and I liked the offense they were running by spreading the ball out more. They looked like NORTHWESTERN's offense. Everybody loves the Buckeyes and respects the team.") still leads slightly over FLORIDA STATE (1/12), GEORGIA TECH (1/5), NORTHWESTERN (12/8--"I really like Chicago. There's a lot to do there.") and PENN STATE (1/19).

Jabari Davis, RB, 5-11, 225, 4.5, Tucker, Ga.

"I have size, speed and quickness," said Davis. "I have that combination of size and speed that's pretty rare. I'm a power back with breakaway speed."

Final 13 game (10-3) stats: 1,400 yards, 20 TDs.

Davis has solidly favored TENNESSEE (childhood favorite, 12/8 official trip, chance to play early, 90 percent chance) since July and the Vols still lead big over GEORGIA ("They were my second favorite team next to TENNESSEE as a kid. I love their running back tradition and they finally got a coach, so that's good. I'm looking forward to talking to him next week."), MISSISSIPPI STATE (1/12) and ALABAMA (1/19).
