  Recruiting Watch - Allen Wallace

The nation's finest prospect, Pennsylvania running back Kevin Shaheed Jones has just committed to VIRGINIA TECH over PENN STATE. With letter-of-intent day approaching on Feb. 7, schools increasingly find themselves in similar one-on-one battles.

Recruiting is a particularly cruel business and never more so than when a school finds itself down to the final weeks of the process with only itself and another school still in the running.

Here are three examples of prospects who have trimmed their choices to two, with plans to make a decision in the immediate future.

Melvin Massey, LB, 6-3, 225, 4.7, Newport News Warwick, Va.

Massey, a SuperPrep All-America, has narrowed his choices to SYRACUSE (Dec. 8 official visit -- "I really liked the city life and the atmosphere," said Massey. "They are an up-and-coming team.") and VIRGINIA (Dec. 1, two hours away, excellent psychology major, knows people on campus, chance to play early).

"I'm gonna let God lead me in the right direction," said Massey. "Right now, I'm just trying to decide whether or not I want to stay close. I have finals this week. I'll decide early next week. I visited N.C. STATE on Jan. 19. It was a nice place, but SYRACUSE and VIRGINIA just offered more that I liked. They both have good psych. majors and I liked all the players better at those schools."

Final 10-game (8-2) stats: 100 tackles, 13 sacks. Benches 415 pounds, squats 500.

Michael Robinson, QB/FS, 6-3, 216, 4.5, Richmond Varina, Va.

Final 13-game (11-2) stats: 1,250 yards rushing, 17 TDs; 1,150 yards passing, 15 TDs, three INTs. "You can't prepare to play me. I do it all," said Robinson, a SuperPrep Elite 50 pick. "I've got the size and speed and I can take a lot of punishment. I never die. Sometimes, I try to control the game too much and try to score a TD on every play. I need to have more patience and not run so much. I'm not a drop-back passer."

Robinson says he has basically narrowed his choices to PENN STATE (Nov. 18 official trip, chance to play early) and VIRGINIA TECH (Dec. 1, amazing offense).

"The inauguration screwed up my plans to visit MARYLAND on Jan. 19, so I rescheduled my trip with them to this weekend, but I'm probably going to choose PENN STATE or VIRGINIA TECH," he said.

Jerrin Holt, WR, 6-3, 195, 4.7, Grand Prairie, Texas

"I'm good at running with the catch," said Holt. "I'm a big, powerful guy but I can change directions like a little guy. I need to improve my flat out speed." Final 10-game (5-5) stats: 46 receptions, 730 yards and eight TDs.

Holt favors VANDY (Dec. 8 official trip, coaches in-home Jan. 23, "I can come in and make an impact right away," he said.) slightly over OKLAHOMA STATE (Jan. 19 visit -- "The campus and facilities are great. The coaches were very nice and smart. They are gonna run a pro-style offense and help the wide receiver flourish," coach Les Miles in-home Jan. 24.).

"I'll decide by the end of the week," Holt said. "MIAMI is too deep. I want to get on the field right away and I didn't feel like a priority for them. GEORGIA TECH is only taking two wide receivers and pulled their visit and offer."
