Jackson enjoys Husky summer camp Posted: Wednesday June 26, 2002 2:59 PMUpdated: Wednesday June 26, 2002 5:30 PM By Greg Biggins, PacWestFootball.com Our top defensive player on the West Coast, Lawrence Jackson, 6-4, 245 pound defensive lineman spent the weekend in Seattle for the Washington football camp. To say Jackson had a good time would be an understatement. Although he's not ready to name a leader, it sounds like the Huskies may have taken the top spot. Just a few weeks ago, Jackson told us Oregon was his top school followed by Miami but things have changed a bit since then. "When I was a sophomore, Washington was my top school," said Jackson, who hails from Inglewood, Calif. "Then towards the end of last season, I started to get into the Oregon thing. But I want to open things up again right now. Washington was great, I love the facilities, the campus, the coaches and the tradition. "I also really like Rick Neuheisel. He's a winner and you can tell he wants to be the best in everything. Not just have the best team but he wants to have the best facilities, have the best uniforms, everything. Another thing I like about the school is the players who come from out of state mostly come for football. They take it seriously and want to be the best which is how I think too."
Jackson added that Washington is recruiting him the hardest. "Oregon has only sent me two or three letters in the last three weeks," Jackson. "I get two handwritten letters a day from Washington. LSU and Michigan also send me a lot of mail and have been recruiting me real hard but I'm thinking I want to stay on the West Coast. "A lot is going to depend on how the teams do on the field. That's going to be real important for me so in no way am I close to a decision. That's why I don't want to name a leader, things can change and probably will. Right now, the schools on my short list are Washington, Oregon, Miami, Tennessee, Michigan and Arizona. I like the local schools too -- USC and UCLA -- but not as much as the other ones. But we'll see what happens on the field." Jackson will attend the Colorado one day camp August 3 with a couple of his teammates and that will be it for him for the rest of the summer. "I'm just going to be running and lifting," Jackson said. "I've been working out hard and I tested better at Washington's camp than any other camp I've been to. I ran a 4.82 in the 40, 4.37 in the shuttle and jumped 31 inches in the vertical. I had a great time. I worked out more with the tight ends than the defensive ends, but I'm being recruited for defense, it just worked out that way." |
