John Fox tossed a pair of touchdowns to R. Jay Soward and Lavalle Woods rushed for 129 yards and two scores as Southern California did all its scoring in the first half and held on for its first win of the season, 27-17 over California. Fox, who completed 15-of-28 passes for 250 yards without an interception, threw touchdowns of 33 and 65 yards to Soward, who finished with seven catches for 148 yards. Woods opened the scoring with a one-yard TD plunge and capped it by scampering in from the 4 as USC (1-2, 1-1 Pac-10) built a 27-3 halftime lead. He gained 77 yards on 18 first-half carries and finished with 32 rushes overall. The Trojans defense registered seven sacks and forced Cal to punt eight times. Justin Vedder hit on 18-of-34 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Golden Bears (2-1, 0-1), who were held to 31 yards on the ground, just 10 in the first half. California, which converted on just 2-of-14 third-down conversions, was penalized 10 times for 79 yards.
