College Football Scoreboards Schedules Standings Polls Stats Conferences Teams Players Recruiting` NCAA Football Recap (Bowling Green-Kansas St)

Posted: Sat September 27, 1997 at 7:53 p.m. EDT

Mike Lawrence ran for three touchdowns and Kansas State allowed just 56 total yards in a 58-0 thumping of Bowling Green, which suffered its worst loss in 62 years.

Eric Hickson rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats (3-0), who have beaten Mid-American Conference teams in their last two games. Kansas State plays at number three Nebraska next week.

"I'm pleased with the way our youngsters played," said Kansas State coach Bill Snyder. "I'm unhappy about some of the penalties we had. That's very undisciplined."

(We expect that play) not just out of Eric, but of every single one of them," Snyder continued. "You expect your running backs to get positive yardage. You can't be a running back if you can't do those things."

Mike Bishop completed 8-of-12 passes for 142 yards and ran for a score before giving way to Jonathan Beasley, who completed all three of his passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.

The 56 yards were a school low for Bowling Green, worse than the previous mark of 72 set against Miami of Ohio in 1951. The Falcons (2-3) were held to minus-nine yards rushing and took their worst beating since a 63-0 rout administered by Toledo on November 2nd, 1935.

"They're a good football team," Bowling Green coach Gary Blackney conceeded. "We'll find out how good they are next week."

Lawrence opened the scoring from a yard out 7:09 into the game, capping a 10-play, 91-yard drive. It remained that way until Bishop did the same less than three minutes into the second quarter to culminate a 66-yard drive. Martin Gramatica added field goals of 23 and 27 yards to stake the Wildcats to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Kansas State refused to relent in the second half as Gramatica booted a 46-yard field goal to make it 23-0 with 9:37 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats then struck for two touchdowns in a 73-second span as Hickson had a one-yard plunge to cap a 34-yard drive.

After a fumble recovered by defensive end Monty Beisel gave Kansas State the ball at the Bowling Green 22, Bishop hit Justin Swift with a 17-yard pass and Lawrence dashed in from five yards out for a 37-0 bulge with 4:02 to go in the third period.

The Wildcats poured it on in the fourth quarter as Beasley and Darnell McDonald hooked up on a five-yard scoring pass six seconds into the fourth quarter, Marlon Charles had a 12-yard jaunt and Lawrence completed the scoring with a six-yard run.

"I know I did better than last week," said Beasley. "It makes me feel better and it gives me more confidence."

Charles finished with 66 yards on 11 carries as Kansas State amassed 638 yards of total offense. Grammatica has kicked six of his seven field goals in the last two games.
