NCAA Football Recap (Fresno St-Texas Tech) Posted: Sun September 20, 1998 at 2:01 a.m EDT TEXAS TECH 34, FRESNO ST 28LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Ricky Williams broke the 200-yard barrier for the second time in three games and Kyle Shipley's fumble recovery for a touchdown gave Texas Tech a 34-28 victory over Fresno State. Williams ran for 244 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the Red Raiders (3-0) blew an 18-point lead and trailed by a point until Shipley picked up Jamie Kimbrough's fumble at the 1 and fell into the end zone with 48 seconds remaining. After the teams exchanged field goals, Williams scored from three and 14 yards on back-to-back possessions to give Texas Tech (3-0) a 17-3 lead. He added a 72-yard jaunt and also caught two passes for 20 yards. Williams has 665 yards in three games. After amassing 251 yards in the season opener against Texas-El Paso, Williams had 170 yards last week against North Texas. Red Raiders quarterback Matt Tittle completed 8-of-17 passes for 109 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown to Donnie Hart with five seconds left in the first half to give Texas Tech a 24-6 halftime cushion. Fresno State (0-2) battled back in the second half. Kimbrough scored from one yard out and the Bulldogs got a score of their own on a fumble recovery by Frank Battle to draw within 24-19 at the start of the fourth quarter. Kimbrough finished with 40 yards on 24 carries. Chris Birkholz kicked a 46-yard field goal to give Texas Tech a 27-19 lead with seven minutes to go. But Jeff Hanna booted a 50-yarder and Justin Johnson returned an interception 33 yards for a score to give Fresno State a 28-27 lead with with four minutes to play. Bulldogs quarterback Billy Volek completed 19-of-32 passes for 349 yards. Charles Smith caught five passes for 80 yards and Kimbrough had five catches for 55 yards.
