College Football Scoreboards Schedules Standings Polls Stats Conferences Teams Players Recruiting` NCAA Football Recap (No Carolina St-Texas)

NO CAROLINA ST 23, (16) TEXAS 20

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Texas might not have a replacement for Ricky Williams, but North Carolina State apparently has one for Torry Holt -- his little brother.

Freshman Terrence Holt spearheaded a huge special teams effort by recording two of North Carolina State's three blocked punts, a pair of which resulted in touchdowns and another in a safety in a 23-20 road upset of Texas in the Black Coaches Association Classic.

It was the season opener for both schools. NC State beat a ranked team early in the season for the third straight year.

Williams, a running back, the Heisman Trophy and was the fifth pick in the NFL draft. Right behind him went Torry Holt, a wide receiver. Both were perhaps the best players in school history.

Texas could have used Williams late in the game to run out the clock while holding a 20-15 lead but failed to get a first down after cornerback Ahmad Brooks intercepted Jamie Barnette at the Longhorns 45-yard line.

Ryan Long was sent back to punt before Terrence Holt, a strong safety, exploded into the ball and running back Eric Leak snapped it up and ran 48 yards down the right sideline, breaking a tackle and finding the end zone. Barnette's two-point conversion pass to Chris Coleman pushed the lead to 23-20 with 3:22 left.

Texas could muster little on its final two possessions and Major Applewhite's "Hail Mary" pass was intercepted by cornerback Lloyd Harrison well short of the end zone as time expired.

Texas built a 17-9 lead in the first half and held it through three quarters.

Less than three minutes in the final quarter, Holt crashed over the left side of the offensive line and used his left hand to block Long's punt. Cornerback Tony Scott grabbed the loose ball at the Texas 48 and raced in for the score, but running back Derek Roberts dropped Barnette's conversion pass, leaving the Wolfpack down two.

Kris Stockton tacked on a 26-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter to make it 20-15 before Holt struck again.

Texas gained 372 yards of total offense and limited NC State to 172. Applewhite completed 30-of-46 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Victor Ike, the freshman from Austin who has the unenviable task of following Williams, turned a short pass from Applewhite into an 80-yard play with 4:31 left in the first half to give Texas a 17-9 lead.

Less than two minutes earlier, Leak, who carried three times for 30 yards, blocked a punt but a horde of N.C. State players failed to cover it before it crossed over the back of the end zone for a safety.

NC State's Ray Robinson ran 25 yards for a touchdown with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter to close the gap to 10-7. He carried 13 times for 58 yards, while Barnette was 9-of-26 for 65 yards with one interception.

Applewhite scored on a two-yard run 4:51 into the game and Stockton booted a 48-yarder midway through the first quarter to give Texas a 10-0 lead.

Kwame Cavil caught 10 passes for 94 yards for the Longhorns.
