NCAA Football Recap (Syracuse-Toledo) Posted: Fri September 3, 1999 at 12:55 a.m EDT SYRACUSE 35, TOLEDO 12TOLEDO, Ohio (Ticker) -- Dee Brown spearheaded a huge rushing attack with 136 yards as Syracuse began the post-Donovan McNabb era with a 35-12 rout of Toledo in a game shortened by a frightening incident. With 82 seconds remaining and Syracuse holding a 23-point lead, Toledo junior defensive end DeJuan Goulde collapsed on the sideline with a severe asthma attack. He was carried off the field on a stretcher and the officials decided to call the game. Redshirt freshman Troy Nunes started at quarterback for Syracuse (1-0) and completed 9-of-13 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Madei Williams was 1-for-4 for eight yards. Nunes and Williams have the unenviable task of replacing McNabb, who was the second overall pick in the NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive with the first of his two touchdown runs from six yards with 1:42 left in the opening quarter. James Mungro's 35-yard TD burst in the second quarter gave the Orangemen a 14-0 lead. Brown rushed 18 times and Mungro had 10 carries for 78 yards as Syracuse outgained Toledo on the ground, 275-66. Brown sprinted 43 yards for his second score midway through the second quarter and Nunes connected with Maurice Minter on an eight-yard TD pass five minutes later, giving Syracuse a 28-0 cushion. Junior Dan Cole completed 15-of-33 passes for 111 yards for Toledo (0-1), which faced Syracuse for the first time. Will Bratton led the Rockets with 39 yards on 16 carries. © 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
