SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- No. 14 Utah aims for its first 4-0 start in a decade when it opens its Mountain West Conference slate against Air Force on Saturday.
The Utes (3-0), who have not won their first four contests since 1994, are coming off a 48-6 thrashing of Utah State on the road last Saturday.
Alex Smith completed 9-of-12 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown and ran for 44 yards and a score in just two quarters. The Utes held a 41-0 lead at the break and rested many starters for the second half.
Air Force (2-1) has won back-to-back contests since a 56-14 home loss to California on September 4. Last Saturday, the Falcons defeated UNLV on the road, 27-10, in their conference opener.
Freshman Shaun Carney completed 12-of-14 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 64 yards in the win.
Air Force had won three in a row in the series before Utah's 45-43 triple-overtime triumph last year. It was the first MWC game to go to three extra periods.
Utah has not beaten Air Force here since 1995 and trails the all-time series, 13-7. The Utes have a winning record against every conference foe except the Falcons.
