ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (Ticker) -- No. 14 Utah tries to avoid a third straight loss to New Mexico when the Mountain West Conference rivals meet Friday.
The Utes (4-0, 1-0 MWC) have lost back-to-back contests and three of four to the Lobos after winning five in a row from 1995-99.
Utah opened its conference slate with a 49-35 triumph over Air Force on Saturday.
Marty Johnson tied a school record by rushing for four touchdowns for the Utes, who rallied from an early 14-0 deficit. Utes quarterback Alex Smith, the MWC Offensive Player of the Week, completed 13-of-23 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 84 yards and another score.
Utah is 4-0 for the first time since 1994, when it won its first eight games and finished 10-2.
The Lobos (2-2, 1-0) thumped intrastate rival New Mexico State on the road on Saturday, 38-3.
D.D. Cox ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns but star starter DonTrell Moore strained a left knee ligament and may miss Friday's game.
