LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Looking to improve to 4-0 for a second straight season, No. 22 Louisville hosts winless East Carolina on Saturday in a Conference USA matchup.
Louisville (3-0, 1-0 C-USA) played its most complete game of the young season last Saturday, blanking North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 34-0, while East Carolina lost its league opener, 24-19, to Cincinnati.
It was the second shutout of the season for the Cardinals, who rank third in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 7.0 points per game. It is the first time since the 1995 season that Louisville's has recorded two shutouts in a season.
Louisville figures to be able to move the ball on the Pirates as East Carolina (0-3, 0-1) ranks last in the NCAA in rush defense, yielding an average of 311.7 yards. The Cardinals have complemented their tough defense with a strong running game that ranks 11th nationally with 256.33 yards per contest.
Louisville, which visits No. 4 Miami on October 14, leads the series with East Carolina, 5-4.
The Cardinals have won three in a row and four of the last five against the Pirates, who are 1-14 under coach John Thompson.
