MIAMI (Ticker) -- No. 13 Miami tries to remain in the hunt for the Atlantic Coast Conference title when it hosts Wake Forest on Saturday.
The Hurricanes (7-2, 4-2 ACC) are tied for third place in the conference with Virginia, trailing 4-1 Virginia Tech and 6-2 Florida State. Miami hosts the Hokies on December 4 and beat the Seminoles, whose league slate is complete.
Were the Hurricanes to beat the Demon Deacons and the Hokies, they most likely would earn the ACC's top bowl bid through a complicated tiebreaker.
Miami is coming off a 31-21 triumph at Virginia last Saturday in which they never trailed.
Frank Gore rushed for a career-high 195 yards and a touchdown and Roscoe Parrish scored on a 62-yard punt return and a 25-yard pass in the fourth quarter for Miami.
Wake Forest (4-5, 1-5) has lost four of its last five contests, including a 31-24 home setback to North Carolina last week in which the Deacons gave up a 45-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left.
Chris Barclay ran for 138 yards and two scores for the Deacons, who need to win this game and at Maryland next week to become bowl eligible.
The Demon Deacons have been competitive this year as their five losses have come by a combined 30 points and their greatest margin of defeat has been seven.
The teams are meeting for the first time since 1971. They have split their six encounters.
