BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Fresno State hopes to play like it did late in the season when it meets No. 18 Virginia in the MPC Computers Bowl.

The Bulldogs (8-3) had a streaky regular season, winning their three non-conference games, then opening Western Athletic Conference play with three straight losses before concluding their slate with five consecutive wins.

Fresno State averaged an astounding 56 points during its five-game winning streak, including an average of 62 points in its last three games, vs. Hawaii and Nevada and at San Jose State. Overall, the Bulldogs rank fifth in the nation in scoring this season (40.42).

Virginia (8-3) began the season in promising fashion, rolling to easy wins in its first five games, but finished with three losses in its final six contests, including defeats in two of its last three.

The Cavaliers surrendered a combined 101 points in their losses to Florida State, Miami and Virginia Tech, but yielded just 84 points in their eight wins.

Led by tailbacks Wali Lundy and Alvin Pearman, the Cavaliers boast the nation's 12th-best rushing offense (241.27), but they rank just 87th in passing (182.27).

The schools will be meeting for the first time.
