SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Navy tries to post its first 10-win season since 1905 when it faces New Mexico in the third annual Emerald Bowl.
With its 42-13 triumph over archrival Army on December 4, Navy (9-2) posted nine regular-season wins for the first time since 1963, when the Roger Staubach-led Midshipmen went 9-1.
Sparked by quarterback Aaron Polanco and running back Kyle Eckel, the Midshipmen rank third in the nation in rushing (291.36).
Navy has not won a bowl game since beating California in the 1996 Aloha Bowl. The Midshipmen lost to Texas Tech in last year's Houston Bowl, 38-14.
New Mexico (7-4) ended its regular season on a five-game winning streak, including a 16-9 win over Wyoming in its finale on November 20.
The Lobos led the Mountain West Conference in scoring defense (17.3), rushing defense (93.7), total defense (316.9) and sacks (42). DonTrell Moore finished second in the league in rushing, averaging 108.3 yards.
New Mexico is playing in its third straight bowl game for the first time in school history. The Lobos have lost their last three bowls, including back-to-back setbacks to UCLA and Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Lobos have not won a bowl since beating Arizona in the Insight.com Bowl in 1997.
