SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Northern Illinois goes bowling for the first time in 21 years when it takes on bowl newcomer Troy in the Silicon Valley Classic.
The Huskies (8-3) have not played in a bowl since beating Cal State-Fullerton, 20-13, in the California Bowl in 1983.
Northern Illinois earned a share of its third Mid-American Conference West Division title in four years.
The Huskies won seven of their final eight games but lost to Toledo on November 9, 31-17, allowing the Rockets to earn the bid in the MAC title game.
In its third Division I-A season, Troy (7-4) beat Marshall and Missouri and finished runner-up in its first campaign as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
The Trojans also lost to co-defending national champion Louisiana State by just 24-20 on the road on October 23.
The teams never have met before.
