PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Adam James kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second overtime, leading Division I-AA Villanova to a 23-20 victory over Temple in the first meeting between the Philadelphia schools since 1980.
Temple's Jared Davis kicked 37-yard field goal with two seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Villanova (2-0) got the first possession in overtime and took a 20-13 lead on Joe Casamento's five-yard TD pass to Noble Chapmen. Temple (0-2) tied it on Mike McGann's 25-yard TD pass to Zamir Cobb.
Temple grabbed a 10-7 lead on Davis' 42-yard field goal with nine minutes left in the third quarter.
James kicked field goals of 20 and 31 yards in the fourth period to give Villanova a 13-10 lead.
Casamento completed 28-of-37 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats. His two-yard TD toss to Phil DiGiacomo tied the contest, 7-7, early in the third.
McGann completed 17-of-27 passes for 238 yards for the Owls, who took a 7-0 lead on Makonne Fenton's one-yard TD run with 46 seconds left in the first quarter.
Villanova increased its lead in the all-time series to 15-12-1. In the previous meeting, Howie Long led the Wildcats to a 23-7 victory.
Villanova improved to 2-3 against the Big East, defeating Rutgers, 37-19, last season.
