RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jay Davis threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns in his first game as Phillip Rivers' replacement as North Carolina State rolled to a 42-0 victory over Division I-AA Richmond in the season opener for both teams.
Davis did not miss a beat in taking over for the second-leading passer in NCAA history, completing 16-of-22 passes for 168 yards. He hit wide receiver Tramain Hall with a 17-yard scoring strike late in the first quarter to give North Carolina State a 14-0 edge.
Davis, a junior who beat out Marcus Davis for the job, capped a 21-point second quarter with his second touchdown pass, an eight-yard connection with Brian Clark just before the first half ended.
Playing without starting tailback T.A. McLendon, who scored 11 touchdowns in 2003, the Wolfpack got a big boost from their defense, which twice intercepted Richmond's Stacy Tutt.
Marcus Hudson returned a blocked punt for a score in the second period for North Carolina State, which allowed Richmond past midfield just three times.
Tutt was 10-of-26 for just 63 yards for Richmond, which was outgained, 403-167.
