OXFORD, Mississippi (Ticker) -- The post-Eli Manning era got off to a rough start as the Memphis Tigers walked in to Oxford for the season opener for both teams and walked out with a 20-13 victory.
The Tigers never trailed and their defense made things tough on Ole Miss quarterback Micheal Spurlock who was making his first career start.
Spurlock completed only 11-of-31 passes for 182 yards.
Deang Williams, who rushed for 118 yards on 37 carries, put Memphis on top, 7-0, with a 10-yard touchdown run to cap a 71-yard first quarter scoring drive.
Danny Wimprine completed 21-of-43 passes for 266 yards and gave the Tigers a 20-6 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard scoring strike to Tavares Gideon.
