CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- E.B. Halsey scored on a four-yard run with 62 seconds remaining as Illinois struggled to a 30-27 victory over Western Michigan.
Halsey set up his winning score with a 40-yard punt return into Broncos territory. He also scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter and finished with 91 yards on 20 carries.
Ryan Cubit's three-yard TD pass to Greg Jennings with 6:56 left in the fourth quarter had given the Broncos a 27-23 lead.
A transfer from Rutgers, Cubit went 27-of-41 for 273 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Brad Bowers passed for 177 yards and a touchdown for Illinois (2-1), which was playing Western Michigan for the first time since a 60-14 victory in 1947.
Thomas Pierre returned the game's opening kickoff 99 yards for a TD for Illinois.
Trovon Riley rushed for 75 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (1-2).
