STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Sylvester Croom's honeymoon would appear to be over.
Ron Whitcomb threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Kevin McMahan with 2:55 remaining as Division I-AA Maine stunned Mississippi State, 9-7.
The first African-American coach in the history of the Southeastern Conference, Croom guided the Bulldogs to a 28-7 win over Tulane in his first game on September 4. But his club was drilled, 43-13, at Auburn last week.
Facing the Black Bears (2-1), who are ranked 16th in Division I-AA and were playing a I-A opponent for the first time since 1991, the Bulldogs committed three turnovers.
Omarr Conner threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Eric Butler in the first quarter to account for the only points for the Bulldogs (1-2).
Mike Mellow kicked a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter for Maine. His extra point was blocked following Whitcomb's go-ahead touchdown pass.
