SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Marty Johnson rushed for four touchdowns and Alex Smith threw for a pair of scores as No. 14 Utah outlasted Air Force, 49-35, in a Mountain West Conference shootout.
Air Force took a 14-0 lead on a pair of TD runs by Shaun Carney. The quarterback capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive in the first quarter with a 5-yard run and ripped off a 47-yard run just over three minutes into the second quarter.
After a slow start, Utah (4-0, 1-0 MWC) reeled off 35 consecutive points. Johnson's first TD run from two yards halved the deficit before Smith hooked up with Paris Warren on a 65-yard scoring strike and added a 10-yard TD run to give the Utes a 21-14 halftime lead.
Steve Savoy caught a 13-yard TD pass from Smith and Johnson scored from nine yards out to extend the lead to 35-14 midway through the third quarter.
Carney, who rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries and completed 9-of-13 passes for 158 yards, pulled Air Force (2-2, 1-1) within 35-28 on a six-yard TD pass to Carston Stahr and a two-yard run with 2:14 left in the period.
Johnson added his third and fourth TD runs in the fourth quarter to give the Utes a 21-point lead with seven minutes to play.
Utah has won its first four games for the first time since 1994.
