SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) -- Ryan Grant scored two second-half touchdowns and Brady Quinn added a third as Notre Dame won its 800th game with a 23-15 victory over Stanford.
Notre Dame (4-2) is the second Division I-A school to reach 800 victories, trailing only Michigan's 838.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the third quarter with three field goals from Michael Sgroi before Grant ended a 12-play drive with his first TD, from one yard out, making the score 10-9.
Stanford (3-2), which was routed by the Fighting Irish last season, 57-7, took a 15-10 lead when J.R. Lemon scored a one-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, but Trent Edwards' two-point conversion pass failed.
The game turned in the final minute of the period when Stanford punter Jay Ottovegio dropped a snap at the Cardinal 33 and teammate David Bergeron covered the ball, giving Notre Dame possesion on downs.
Grant, who had missed three games with a hamstring injury, scored from three yards out moments later to give Notre Dame a 16-15 lead early in the fourth.
Quinn, who was 11-for-24 for 173 yards and was sacked three times, closed out the scoring with a two-yard run with 4:10 remaining, giving coach Tyrone Willingham his third consecutive victory against his former school.
Edwards was 17-for-38 for 267 yards for the Cardinal.
