WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- This time there was no heartbreak for Wake Forest.
Chris Barclay rushed for 134 yards and redshirt freshman Ben Mauk threw a touchdown pass to lead the Demon Deacons to a 24-22 victory over Duke for their first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season.
Wake Forest(4-4, 1-4 ACC) had lost its first four games in conference play either in overtime or on the game's final drive.
Barclay, who rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in last year's 42-13 win, scored on a one-yard touchdown to give the Demon Deacons a 14-9 lead at the half. Duke got three field goals in the half from Matt Brooks.
With 2,612 yards rushing in his career, Barclay moved up three spots to third place on the school's all-time rushing list.
Ryan Plackemeier kicked a 31-yard field goal just over two minutes into the second half to extend the lead before Duke quarterback Mike Schneider passed three yards to Andy Roland to cut the deficit to 17-15. A two-point conversion failed.
Micah Andrews put the game away for Wake with a one-yard scoring run with 3:23 left in the third quarter.
Playing in relief of starter Cory Randolph, Ben Mauk completed 11-of-20 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown and ran for 65 yards for the Demon Deacons, who won their fifth straight against the Blue Devils. Randolph completed just 1-of-4 passes and threw two interceptions.
Schneider was 28-for-45 for 300 yards and two touchdowns for Duke (1-7, 0-5 ACC), which lost its sixth straight conference game despite producing season-high point total.
