CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Jay Davis threw three touchdown passes and the nation's top-ranked defense played up to its reputation in North Carolina State's 52-14 thrashing of East Carolina.

Davis threw two of his scoring strikes in the third quarter when North Carolina State (5-6) outscored East Carolina 21-0 to take a 38-7 lead.

The Wolfpack defense entered the game allowing an average of only 229.5 yards per game and had little trouble controlling the Pirates offense. East Carolina (2-9) managed only seven first downs and just 140 total yards in losing its fourth straight.

Davis completed 18-of-35 passes for 227 yards and was intercepted once. He added a three-yard TD run in the third quarter to cap a nine-play, 82-yard drive.

East Carolina finished with 30 yards rushing on 38 carries and Des Robinson completed 7-of-23 passes for 62 yards. He also was intercepted twice and sacked three times.

The Pirates had won four of the last five meetings with the Wolfpack but failed to send coach John Thompson out a winner. Thompson, 3-20 in two seasons, announced his resignation on November 17, effective at the end of the season.
