BOISE, Idaho (AP) -Boise State rolled up 563 total yards, forced six turnovers and had four different players throw touchdown
Such impressive stats helped the No. 9 Broncos to a 49-14 victory over Utah State to remain unbeaten and in contention for
a Bowl Championship Series berth.
The victory keeps alive Boise State's hopes for a bid to the BCS heading into next week's game at Idaho, a team they've beaten
nine straight times. The Broncos then travel to Nevada before closing out the season at home against Fresno State.
Now if the Broncos (9-0, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference) could just do something about those penalties.
Boise State, already one of the WAC's most penalized teams, was flagged 12 times for 114 yards, the third consecutive game
with at least 11 penalties.
''The end result is what we wanted. The process of how we went about it was not,'' said Boise State coach
, whose record improved to 32-3. ''We can get better and play cleaner. You don't want to be your own worst enemy.
''There will be lots of running and practicing on re-creating the situations (in practice) to get it right,'' he said.
Despite the mistakes, three turnovers and sluggish play against an unheralded opponent, the Broncos never let Utah State (2-8,
2-4) get any closer than 14 points.
The Aggies pulled within 28-14 on their first possession of the second half when backup quarterback
threw a 29-yard TD to
But the Broncos responded two possessions later, using trick plays to take control of the game.
After driving into the red zone, Broncos receiver
took a handoff and faked an end run before zipping a 17-yard TD pass to Childs, all alone in the back corner of the end zone
to put the Broncos up 35-14, sealing their eighth straight win over the Aggies.
was 27-of-36 for 362 yards and threw two touchdowns and an interception before heading to the bench in the fourth quarter.
Childs led all receivers with seven catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns. His first score was also the byproduct of a
trick play - a lateral to receiver
who fired a 57-yard TD to Childs that put the Broncos up 28-0 in the second quarter.
''It's real fun when ... you're out there you have a feeling you know it's going to work,'' Childs said. ''It's fun to execute
on those gadget plays that you work on every day in practice.''
also had seven catches for 57 yards and two TDs.
And Boise State's defense, which came in allowing just 9.8 points per game, yielded 44 rushing yards, picked off three passes
and recovered three fumbles, one of which safety
returned 4 yards for a touchdown.
Like the Broncos, the Aggies created their own set of problems.
The Aggies were penalized 13 times for 122 yards. Setzer threw two interceptions and starter
, who was ineffective and pulled in the second quarter, threw another pick.
Setzer was 19-of-33 for 226 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yarder to
just before the half.
Utah State had 305 total yards, but struggled to sustain drives by converting on just 4 of 12 third downs.
But for coach Brent Guy, the biggest weakness was his team's ability to respond to Boise State's momentum swing late in the
''We had a chance to go down and make it a one-score game ... and after we did not do that, our mentality was not the same,''
said Guy, whose team has played four ranked teams this season. ''You see what kind of football team we have. We just didn't
get it done.''
