TROY, Ala. (AP) - Omar Haugabook passed for 194 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 64 yards and two more scores and Troy beat Middle Tennessee 45-7 Tuesday night to clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference title. Haugabook completed 16-of-29 passes and also had 16 carries for the Trojans (8-3, 6-0 Sun Belt Conference) before sitting out the fourth quarter. Troy can win the a second straight Sun Belt championship and an automatic berth to the New Orleans Bowl with a victory over Florida Atlantic in two weeks or a Florida Atlantic loss to Florida International. Middle Tennessee (5-6, 4-2) was in position for a shot at a share of the title coming into the game, but had two special teams blunders lead to Troy touchdowns in the second quarter. First, R.J. Roberts blocked a punt to give the Trojans the ball at Middle Tennessee's 4-yard line. Three plays later, Haugabook rushed for a 6-yard touchdown with 10:49 left. A few minutes later, Middle Tennessee's Desmond Gee fumbled a punt return at the 26-yard line. That set up Sean Dawkins ' 1-yard TD run to give the Trojans a 24-7 lead. Troy then drove 91 yards on 16 plays to open the second half for Kenny Cattouse 's 1-yard touchdown run. The Trojans got some more help from Middle Tennessee mistakes. They were facing second-and-40 after a sack and two penalties, but got a first down on the first of two pass interference penalties on the drive. The Trojans outgained Middle Tennessee 549-209 in total yardage. |
